Parent Testimonials
My kids are half Chinese and half Irish. They refused to speak Chinese as their father does not speak, their friends do not speak, it is not offered in our public schools in elementary or middle school levels and rarely seen in popular media. But after attending this warm and embracing community at CSLC, they are now interested in learning to communicate in a language that is very different from the much advertised Romance languages. It has allowed them to be exposed and feel close to another culture and be surrounded by other kids and adults in a similar position who are also learning. This makes it fun for kids rather than painful or scary. They are now eager to join in activities as participants rather than just as observers. From a practical perspective, learning more about China is particularly important given the growing importance of China in the world's economic and political scenes. For me, it is important because this is part of their heritage. The school has truly enriched our lives. Eileen Liu McCormack (March 2018)
Our daughter has been a student at CLSC for the past five years. We enrolled at CLSC when she was a toddler and started with the Chopstix program. Being able to understand, speak and write Chinese is a source of pride for her. Learning a foreign language is hard work, and the experience has taught our daughter to be open minded with different cultures, languages and the value of persistent effort.
CLSC has become a community for our family to meet like-minded families that are interested in developing basic foreign language skills and learning more about Chinese culture. The faculty and staff have been consistently supportive and helpful to the families, and are extremely responsive to our questions. It is a well run organization with discipline, expertise and passion for Chinese culture.
For our family in particular, given some of the weekend demands from sports activities, CLSC teachers are available for catch-up tutoring in person or via Skype, which has been very effective. Z. Wang (March 2017)
My seven year old twins, Lucas and Sophie have had an excellent experience at CLSC. They have been taking classes for 3 years and through the process gained so much. I also took adult Mandarin at CLSC for one year to learn the basics so I could help my children study. We are not Chinese in our ethnic background, but have an admiration and appreciation of the language and culture. I enrolled Lucas and Sophie hoping they would understand language differences, find strategies to remember the characters and learn about Chinese history and culture. They have learned more than I imagined and in a fun, positive and encouraging atmosphere. The teachers are all superb! The community at CLSC goes above and beyond to also include the parents in activities and opportunities to learn about Chinese culture. Liz E.
Our five year old daughter, Margo, joined CLSC this past academic year after we moved to town from NYC. She has thrived in the CLSC program with engaging, energetic instruction and an impressive peer group. The teachers at CLSC are exceptional, and they hold high expectations for students. Margo is proud of her developing reading and speaking abilities in Mandarin, and she genuinely enjoys practicing multiple times per week in preparation for Sunday class. Mandarin instruction has helped facilitate Margo's overall curiosity and interest in individuals, ideas, cultures, traditions. CLSC's teachers -- and the weekly additional activities organized by the team -- have provided Margo with an intellectually stimulating environment where she also has fun! Additionally, the door is always open at CLSC for parents to be involved in a variety of interesting and productive ways. Thank you, CLSC! Jennifer P.
